Welcome to First Grade!
First Grade Information Packet
I am pleased to be your child’s first grade teacher this year. Please read the following regarding important procedures/routines.
Assessments/ Report Cards
Report cards are issued every nine weeks. Literacy testing (DIBELS/Running records) is administered three times a year. It is conducted at the beginning of year to determine your child’s academic needs. It helps me determine where to begin their instruction and what they need to focus on while learning to read. We also conduct the literacy testing middle of year and end of year. This literacy testing helps to determine your child’s reading level. In math, we conduct Benchmark assessments. We also conduct end of unit assessments to determine if a student needs more instruction on a specific academic standard.
Attendance
Your child’s regular and prompt attendance is crucial to his/her success. Students are to report to the Gym if they arrive between 7:45 and 8:05. We expect your child to be seated ready to learn by 8:15 am. Please report your child’s absence no later than 9 a.m. to the office.
Birthdays
Birthdays are a special occasion for your child. Feel free to bring in a special treat to celebrate. We celebrate birthdays outside during our playtime. Please make note of students with allergies. If you are having a party for your child, we ask that invitations be mailed rather than brought to school, unless the entire class is invited (or all boys/all girls).
Bus Riders
Students are released for buses after car riders. They wait with their grade level and a teacher until they hear the dismissal announcement. It is important that the neither students nor parents cross the road in front of a bus– please use crosswalk at all times!
Car Riders
If your child is a car rider, you may pick them up from the car line or walk up. If you park in the parking lot and walk over to get your child, please, please, please use the cross walks. One is located near the front entrance to school and another near the right side of school (if you are facing the school). First grade stands in front of the first grade pod (2 doors outside Mrs. Wampler’s and Mr. Flemings’ rooms). Please remember safety rules when picking up your child– if they need to cross in front of the car to get in, please get out and help them or ask a teacher to walk them around.
Conferences
Parent teacher conferences will be held in the fall and again in the spring if needed. However, if at any time you wish to meet with me throughout the year, feel free to contact me through email or phone. I do ask that you schedule a conference rather than coming to talk to me during the school day as I am busy teaching your child.
Dismissal
Students are released at 3:15. If you need to pick your child up early for an appointment, you must sign them out of the office.
Educare
Educare students will be walked to the cafeteria by a first grade teacher. Registration forms can be found in the office.
Homework
Students will receive a Homework packet each Monday. It will have a homework cover sheet that explains the homework and weekly skills as well as reminders. Students will be asked to complete homework on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights. Attached to the cover sheet you will find the assignments for each day. Homework should not take more than 15 minutes per night, if at any time your child struggles with the assignment, please contact me ASAP. Packets are to be returned on Friday.
Instructional Fees-$20
Fee money is used to purchase materials for your child– please make checks payable to Lake Ridge School and place in a labeled envelope.
Medication
All medicine must be kept in the clinic, with appropriate forms. These forms can be found in the office. Please notify me of any medical concerns you have about your child.
Money
All money sent to school should be placed in a labeled envelope. Lunch money can be placed in your child’s account at anytime online at www.myschoolbucks.com or send in lunch money in envelope with child’s name and amount.
Morning Arrival
Students who arrive between 7:45 and 8:05 MUST report to the gym. Students report to the classroom at 8:05. Students are not allowed to wait in hallway. We are working on independence in first grade. Feel free to walk your child to the door but then allow him/her to enter the classroom alone and begin their day. I promise to take great care of your little oneJ.
Outdoor recess
Students are given 30 minutes a day for recess. Please dress your child accordingly. You may pack your child a water bottle to keep in their cubbies.
Parent-Teacher Relationships
I am sure you have heard the old saying “It takes a village to raise a child”. I encourage parents to be as involved as possible. My door is always open!
Snack
Please pack a healthy snack with your child daily. If you would like to donate snack for those who may forget or have financial issues, it would be greatly appreciated.
Take Home Folders
Your child will be given a parent/teacher communication folder. This folder will go back and forth between home and school every day. This is a great place to put notes for me regarding transportation, conferences or any questions or concerns you may have. Homework can be found in this folder as well as graded work and/or important newsletters and notes.
Transportation Changes
It is crucial that I know if your child’s transportation changes. If they schedule a play date with another student, please notify me with a note, email, call to office, or in person. Please do not rely on your child to relay the message– I must have a note, email, or phone call for safety reasons.
Thank you in advance for your support and help this year. I am looking forward to working with your child and alongside you, the parent, as we further your child’s education.
